Grasim at Première Vision Paris: Building India’s Global Natural Fibre Story Through Linen, Wool and Sustainable Innovation

At the recently concluded Première Vision in Paris, the spotlight on sustainability, traceability and premium natural fibres was unmistakable. Among the exhibitors addressing this evolving global demand was Grasim Industries Limited, representing the domestic textiles business of the Aditya Birla Group.

Abhishek Jain, Vice President – Brand and Retailers

In an in-depth interaction during the exhibition, Abhishek Jain, Vice President – Brand and Retailers, outlined how Grasim’s vertically integrated textile operations, anchored in linen, wool and premium cotton, are positioning the company as a reliable, future-ready sourcing partner for global brands at a time when trade realignments and sustainability expectations are reshaping the industry.

A Multi-Business Group with a Focused Textile Presence at PV

Aditya Birla Group’s participation at Première Vision reflects the breadth and depth of its textile portfolio. While the Group spans businesses ranging from fibre and chemicals to cement and paints, its presence at PV is sharply focused on textiles, specifically fibres and fabrics.

Grasim participates at the show through its domestic textiles arm, which includes fabric, fibre and yarn businesses. While yarns were not showcased at this edition, linen fabrics, wool products and premium natural fibre solutions formed the core of the presentation. This clear segmentation allows Grasim to engage meaningfully with global buyers seeking specialised, high-quality natural fibre products.

Jayashree Textiles: Pioneering Linen in India

A cornerstone of Grasim’s textile legacy is Jayashree Textiles, which introduced linen to India in 1949, just two years after independence. At a time when linen was largely unfamiliar to Indian consumers, Jayashree undertook the formidable task of building awareness around European-quality linen and embedding it into Indian wardrobes.

Through its flagship retail brand Linen Club, Jayashree not only popularised linen but also revolutionised the domestic premium apparel market. Today, Linen Club operates one of India’s largest single-brand franchise networks, with over 240 exclusive brand outlets and a presence in more than 9,000 multi-brand outlets, setting benchmarks in premium linen retail.

End-to-End Integration in Linen and Wool

Jayashree Textiles is today India’s only fully integrated linen manufacturer, with state-of-the-art spinning, weaving and finishing facilities equipped with advanced machinery from Switzerland and Italy. The company sources the finest apparel-grade flax exclusively from France, Belgium and the Netherlands, the heartland of European flax cultivation, ensuring consistency, traceability and superior fibre quality.

From flax fibre to yarn, fabric and finished processing, the entire value chain is controlled in-house. This vertical integration enables Jayashree to manufacture over 3,000 weaves, textures and blends, many of which are difficult to replicate elsewhere.

In wool, Grasim operates a unique superwash yarn facility in Kolkata—the only one of its kind in India—producing washable wool yarns used in premium garments. Nearly 90% of wool tops and worsted yarn production is exported to demanding markets such as the UK, Italy, Korea and Turkey, where quality and compliance standards are uncompromising.

Products and Solutions for Global Buyers

At Première Vision, Grasim presented a comprehensive natural fibre offering tailored for global markets. Linen fabrics, made entirely from certified European flax, formed the backbone of the collection, supported by premium cotton and wool products.

A key differentiator is Grasim’s capability in yarn-dyed linen fabrics, which are fully produced in-house. This allows for exceptional consistency, superior whites, and the flexibility to cater to smaller lot sizes, an increasingly important requirement for boutique European brands and niche retailers.

Rather than competing in commoditised, price-driven segments dominated by large-volume players, Grasim consciously positions itself as a solution provider. By engaging closely with customers on design direction, colour palettes and seasonal trends, the company delivers collections that reflect a deep understanding of end-consumer preferences.

Certified, Responsible and Trusted Sourcing

Responsible sourcing and compliance are non-negotiable for Grasim’s textile business. All linen fibres are certified European Flax, ensuring ethical farming practices, zero irrigation, and minimal chemical usage. Jayashree’s facilities are fully compliant with global standards such as OEKO-TEX®, ZDHC and other European regulatory norms, assuring buyers that no harmful chemicals are used at any stage of production.

This commitment extends across the Aditya Birla Group. Grasim has consciously exited synthetic fabric manufacturing, divesting polyester-based operations with a clear strategic decision to focus exclusively on sustainable, natural fibres, linen, cotton and wool.

Strengths That Set Grasim Apart

For global buyers evaluating sourcing partners, Grasim offers a rare combination of strengths. Financial stability as part of the Aditya Birla Group provides long-term assurance. Deep vertical integration, from fibre procurement to finished fabric, ensures quality control and supply reliability.

Large-scale raw material procurement enables forward planning, insulating customers from volatility in freight rates, currency fluctuations and crop cycles. Strong design and development teams deliver customised collections season after season, while innovation remains central to the company’s approach.

Innovation Rooted in Sustainability

Innovation at Grasim’s textiles business is increasingly driven by sustainability and evolving consumer needs. Recent launches include Silk Touch, a biodegradable, cellulosic fabric made from linen and rayon that offers a luxurious silk-like feel with high lustre and softness.

The company has also introduced Circular Solutions, using recycled linen from pre-consumer waste, pushing linen further into the circular economy space. These initiatives reduce environmental impact, optimise raw material usage, and prepare the business for future regulatory and consumer expectations.

Ongoing R&D collaborations with partners such as Woolmark, CELC, ICAR, Sanitised and global fibre innovators reinforce Grasim’s commitment to continuous product development.

FTAs, Market Shifts and the Road Ahead

Recent free trade agreements with Australia, the Middle East, the UK, the EU and progressing discussions with the US are creating renewed optimism across the textile value chain. Jain noted a visible shift in sentiment at Première Vision, with existing customers expressing intent to increase volumes and previously constrained buyers re-engaging with confidence.

However, he also highlighted a structural challenge: India’s garment manufacturing capacity must scale in quality, reliability and speed to fully capitalise on these opportunities. Grasim is addressing this by offering full-service solutions where possible, while also partnering with select garment manufacturers capable of meeting premium standards.

Grasim’s presence at Première Vision Paris underscored a powerful narrative: India’s future in global textiles lies in premiumisation, sustainability and innovation, not commoditisation. With a legacy that introduced linen to India, unmatched vertical integration in natural fibres, and the backing of the Aditya Birla Group, Grasim is uniquely positioned to serve the next phase of global demand.

As markets open, consumer preferences shift toward comfort and sustainability, and supply chains seek reliability, Grasim’s linen, wool and premium cotton offerings stand as a compelling proposition, anchored in heritage, driven by innovation, and aligned with the future of responsible fashion.
